A victorious life purpose
SATURDAY 10-12-19 2 Corinthians 5:14-21, 2 Timothy 4:6-8
Paul made it crystal-clear that he lived for a big, valuable purpose. And, as he awaited the coming of the Roman executioner who would end his earthly life, he expressed confidence that he had lived out that purpose. Scholar N. T. Wright said, “The picture we get…is of a man facing serious trouble and likely death, beset with problems and anxieties, but who nevertheless remains determined to bring every single aspect of his life into the orbit of the gospel itself, the royal proclamation of Jesus as Lord. He lives in the present world, Caesar’s world, as already a cheerful citizen of the world to come, Jesus’ world.” *
Most Roman, Greek and Canaanite religions offered gifts and sacrifices to try to reconcile their angry, displeased gods to them. But Paul said that was backward. He said Jesus didn’t have to persuade a reluctant God to love us—“God was reconciling the world to himself through Christ.” Once reconciled, all of us, like Paul, help carry God’s call—“we are ambassadors who represent Christ.”
Is your life on a course that will enable you to say, whenever it ends, “I have fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith”? Are there any “mid-course corrections” you want to make so that Paul’s victorious words can also be your personal testimony?
Prayer: Lord Jesus, lead on, O King victorious!
Lead me through and beyond this life, until I can claim the champion’s wreath
in your eternal kingdom. Amen.
