Part 3: The Future
Back to the Unknown: The Hopeful Phase
(Read Part 1 and Part 2)
What’s next? I’m now nine chemo sessions down with seven more to go! My final chemo is scheduled for December 4th, and surgery will follow in January, with radiation after that. By then, the Mischief Maker should be a thing of the past. Life will never look the same, but in the best possible way. I’ll never again take for granted the love of my family, the strength of my community, or the unwavering presence of God in my life.
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” -Jeremiah 29:11
It’s not about wondering if God is ‘showing up’; it’s about whether I choose to see how He’s always been showing up. Years ago, Pastor Tom said something that stuck with me. I once told him, “It feels like God has His fingerprints all over this—it’s unreal.” He responded, “Is this different from other times, or are you just noticing it now?” That thought has stayed with me and rings true in my life every day.
Even now, in the middle of everything, I think constantly about how I can make an impact coming out of this—even in small ways. Back in March, I shared my diagnosis with a friend, she called me two days later and said she had a vivid vision: that God had a plan for me, that I was going to do something really good from this and make a difference. The next day, she called again to clarify, “Just to be clear, you’re not supposed to do that now—you need to focus on yourself first, then do it later!”
Well, I’ve got a few ideas brewing for what that might be. And I’ve started a few of them already – writing messages of support to those starting their journey, practicing gratitude, and sharing my story. But there is more to come – there are more chapters to be written on this journey. So, we’ll see where it leads!
