SNAPSHOT

MATT TURMAN
We’re thrilled to celebrate Matt Turman, who has just been named Director of Site and Facilities at Rainbow Trail Lutheran Camp. Matt first traveled to Rainbow Trail with our youth group in 2015, and we’re so proud to see how his journey has come full circle. Congratulations, Matt! And congratulations to his parents, Beth and John Turman, who have long been part of the ShepHills community. High school youth trips truly are life-changing.

This summer, a new group of ShepHills youth will make their own memories at Rainbow Trail. We can’t wait to see how God continues building life-long faith through their experiences.

Matt isn’t the only ShepHills alum whose faith was formed at Rainbow Trail—Will Johnson is another former camper making an impact, and we’ll be sharing more about him soon!

Brian Peterson, brother of Beth Turman.

God we give thanks for 48 years of your calling this congregation into being as Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church.  We pray for your Holy Spirit to continue to equip and inspire us for mission and ministry.

O God, we thank you for our local ministry partnerships, especially Austin City Lutherans, Upbring, and Butterfly Preschool. May we share your love around our neighborhood, city, and state. We also pray for our global mission partners: ILAG in Guatemala and Charis in Haiti, as well as those ministries we work alongside to share your love in places far away, yet near to our hearts. Bless our mission together in the name of Christ who unites us.

God, we give you thanks for all the saints who have gone before us in faith and now rest in eternal life, especially Carl Cole and David Ray, former members of Shepherd of the Hills, and Bishop Horacio Castillo, founder of ILAG and partner in ministry in Guatemala. We commend Carl, David, and Bishop Horacio to your everlasting love as we trust in the promise of resurrection in Christ.

More Than Enough: Highlights from the 2025 Synod Assembly

May 7, 2025 by Pr. Ryan Dockery Leave a Comment

On May 3, 2025, members of the Southwestern Texas Synod gathered at Abiding Presence Lutheran Church in San Antonio for a Spirit-filled, one-day Synod Assembly under the theme More Than Enough / Más que Suficiente. Drawing from Mark 6:30–44, we were reminded that God equips us with everything we need to share the good news and serve our neighbors.

Representing Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, the following members attended: Pastor Lauren Dow Wegner, Pastor Ryan Dockery, and delegates Deb Darnell, Bill Dawson, and Alana Oehler.

Vibrant Ministries Taking Root

Delegate Deb Darnell noted the energy surrounding the Gather ministry—a bold and Spirit-led movement among people in their 20s and 30s, supported by the synod and led by Pastor Cecie Suknaic and Joel Timmons. What began with a few local gatherings has blossomed into 50 locations nationwide. Ministries like this remind us that the Spirit is alive in the next generation of leaders and disciples.

Several delegates lifted up the synod’s support for campus and outdoor ministries. We celebrated 75 years of Cross Trails Ministry with a special offering, raising over $20,000 to help realize their dream of a new modern kitchen. “If we meet our goal,” Deb reminded us, “Bishop Sue will dye her hair purple. Let’s get there!”

Campus ministry was also spotlighted, with efforts like Tailgate Tuesday at the University of Texas feeding over 400 students weekly.

A Shifting and Hopeful Landscape

Bill Dawson reflected on the increasing collaboration between congregations—a hopeful trend as churches share ministry participation and resources. “The Synod is recognizing they need to keep changing,” Bill observed, “shifting from ‘this is what you need to do’ to ‘how can we help?’” He praised the ELCA representative’s strong message and appreciated the election of newer, younger pastors to leadership roles, calling it “a major plus and opportunity” for revitalization. The intentional bilingual participation was also a meaningful sign of our synod’s growing inclusivity.

The Power of Youth and Simplicity

First-time delegate Alana Oehler was moved by the openness of the assembly to young voices. “I was inspired to witness the easy acceptance of youth in the leadership process,” she said, referencing the addition of two new youth to the Synod Council. “The more youth are involved, the more they are willing to maintain that organization long term.”

Alana also appreciated the one-day format, calling it effective and respectful of people’s time, and was especially touched by the short stories of feeding ministries and Cross Trails. “My husband and brother-in-law both have fond memories of their times at Camp Chrysalis,” she shared.

Celebrating Local Leaders

We’re proud to share that ShepHill’s member Rebecca Guengerich was reelected to serve as Chair of the Synod Leadership Team, and Pastor Ryan Dockery and Pastor Adam Varner were elected to serve on the Synod Council. We give thanks for their leadership and the ways they help represent our congregation and region at the synod level.

Looking Ahead

Next year’s Synod Assembly will take place right here in Austin on May 1–2, 2026. If you’re interested in representing Shepherd of the Hills as a delegate, please reach out to Pastor Ryan—we’d love to have your voice at the table!

April 16, 2025 by Front Office Leave a Comment

The artwork in the hallway outside the church office was created by visual artist and church member Nicholas Dertien during Palm Sunday worship in 2017. Using pastels, Nicholas created rubbings from worship artifacts—palm leaves, crosses, and other sacred elements—layered thoughtfully over pieces of scripture. The pieces will remain on display throughout the Easter season.

Sunday, APRIL 20

SUNRISE WORSHIP
7:00 a.m.
| Outdoor Worship Center
Experience the Easter story in the rustic setting of our Outdoor Worship Center! This intimate service is about 45 minutes long, includes Holy Communion, and is perfect for early risers. In the event of bad weather, this service will be held in the Butterfly Chapel. Check the website.

SANCTUARY WORSHIP
9:00 a.m. + 11:00 a.m. | Sanctuary
11:00 a.m.  Livestream
Gather in our beautiful sanctuary as we release the Alleluias that have been silenced during Lent! Joy is everywhere as we sing hymns accompanied by brass, bells, and choir, receive an inspiring message, and share Holy Communion. Same service, two times.

Brooks Campos, child of Jason and Monica Campos, will be baptized at the 9:00 a.m. service.
Carter Anniston Jones, child of Ryan and Katie Jones, will be baptized at the 11:00 a.m. service.

EASTER SUNDAY CHILDCARE
This Easter Sunday we will have childcare available for kids pre-k and younger from 8:45a-12:30pm. Please check-in your child upstairs in Room 203.  Caregivers will ask for your phone number in case they need to reach you.

A NOTE ABOUT ASPERSION
Through our baptism we are forever connected to Jesus in life, death, and eternal life. This makes Easter the perfect time to remember and rejoice in our baptism through the act of aspersion–or sprinkling! At 9 + 11 a.m. our ministry leaders will offer a blessing and dip a sprinkler (aspergillum) into water. As they process through the church, their arms waving and water droplets flying, we’ll lift our voices in song, proclaiming “Praise, Praise, Praise the Lord.” It will be joy-filled!

EASTER BREAKFAST
8:00am – 10:30am | Activity Center

Every great celebration includes good food and friends. Join us for a festive spread of homemade delights by the Food for Fellowship Team.

LENT AND EASTER OFFERING

As an ELCA church, we are called to do God’s work in local communities and the world by pursuing justice, peace, and human dignity for and with all people. Our special Lent offering is designated to the Lutheran ministry of Global Refuge (previously Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Services). Global Refuge is the largest faith-based national nonprofit exclusively dedicated to helping restore a sense of home to immigrants, asylum seekers, and refugees. You may contribute to this special offering anytime during Lent using the dedicated Lent/Easter Fund.

Lent offerings are collected on Ash Wednesday, Lent Wednesdays, Holy Week, and Easter.

ONE-HOUR IMPACT
We need drivers for Meals on Wheels. Drivers pick up meals from Holy Cross Lutheran and deliver them to housebound individuals. It takes only about an hour-that’s only 60 minutes-to change lives! Volunteer once a month or once a week-whatever fits your schedule-and it’s always more fun if you do it with a friend. Contact Weldon Allison.

DONATIONS FOR BREAD FOR ALL (BFA)
All sizes of diapers are needed, and we continue to covet (in a good way) donations of peanut butter, dried beans, and canned goods. Bring your donations to the bins on weekdays from 9am-4pm, Saturdays from 9-11am, and Sunday mornings.

VOLUNTEER AT BREAD FOR ALL (BFA)
Volunteers are welcome to help with setup and food distribution at the Bread for All Food Pantry. This is a wonderful opportunity for individuals and groups of all ages. For more information on descriptions, times, and locations, please visit the calendar or contact Weldon Allison.

O God, we thank you for our local ministry partnerships, especially Austin City Lutherans, Upbring, and Butterfly Preschool. May we share your love around our neighborhood, city, and state. Bless our mission together in the name of Christ who unites us.

God, we give you thanks for all the saints who have gone before us in faith and now rest in eternal life, especially Jesse Highum, daughter of Pr. Brad and Nance Highum. We commend Jesse to your everlasting love as we trust in the promise of resurrection in Christ.
